Jason exited the cab he’d arrived in and entered the restaurant.

The maître d' approached him. “Good evening, sir. How may I help you?”

“I’m supposed to meet a friend here,” Jason replied. “She’s attending an alumni event at this restaurant.”

“Do you have a name, sir?”

“Dr. Gabriella Landi.” Jason hoped someone who knew her well would be curious about who Gabriella’s visitor was.

“One minute, please. Would you like to wait at the bar?”

“Sure.”

The maître d' led the way, and soon Jason sat at the bar nursing a glass of sparkling water. He turned and studied the place as he waited. The restaurant seemed to have two private rooms as far as he could tell from the foot traffic. One group seemed to be having some sort of senior citizen celebration, while young men and women who looked to be about Gabriella’s age paraded in and out of the second room. Jason guessed the alumni event was taking place in the latter.

Soon the manager returned with a young woman in tow and then left.

“Hello,” the woman said as she adjusted the sensible glasses sitting on the bridge of her nose. “Are you looking for Gabriella?”

“Yes. I was told she’d be here.”

“And who might you be?”

“I’m Jason Silvers, a friend of her brother’s. And you are …”

“Caitlin Summers, Gabriella’s classmate.”

“Nice to meet you, Caitlin. What about Gabriella? Is she still here?” Jason knew exactly where Gabriella was, but it was better to pretend otherwise to elicit the information he wanted.

Caitlin studied him for a moment and seemed satisfied with what she saw. “She’s gone.”

“Gone? I thought the alumni event wasn’t supposed to be over by now.”

“There was an incident. Look, I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but seeing you’re her brother’s friend and all …”

Jason gave her an encouraging smile. “You can tell me. What happened?”

“She had a run-in with her ex-boyfriend, Scott Sanders. I never liked that guy, and I still don’t know what Gabriella saw in him. But he insinuated he had some compromising pictures of Gabriella. I have no idea how he got said pictures, but he seemed rather confident they exist.”

The muscle in Jason’s jaw tightened. The creep probably had those pictures. “Anything else?”

Caitlin shook her head. “But Gabriella held her own. I’m proud of how she handled it. But now I’m worried if she’s okay.” Someone called Caitlin’s name from the threshold of the private room. “Listen, I have to go.”

“No worries. Thanks for telling me.”

“Please take good care of her, okay?”

“I will.”

“Bye.” She turned and hurried to the private room and soon disappeared inside.

Jason turned back to his drink. So, that was what happened. His intuition had been right about the creep. He needed to find out more about Scott Sanders.

Jason dropped a twenty-dollar bill on the bar and headed out of the restaurant. On his way out, he spied the maître d' and slipped him a hundred-dollar bill. The maître d' thanked him profusely and held the door open for him.

Jason exited the place and strode over to where he’d parked his car.
